What Is a Wellness Wheel?
Our Wellness Wheels depict the eight dimensions of wellness in our lives. This wheel shows how interconnected the dimensions of our lives are and how important it is to maintain a balance throughout each.
You can think of the wellness wheel as a self-exploration tool that will help you live a more fulfilling life. If you think about it this way, what areas of your life do you think you can improve? As you read this article, think about how you would rate each aspect of your wellness wheel and how you could balance it all out!
Intellectual Wellness
Intellectual wellness involves engaging your mind in learning experiences and expanding your knowledge. It includes reading books, taking classes, and playing games that challenge your mental skills. The brain develops more neural pathways when we learn new skills, which allows electrical impulses to travel faster across them!
Emotional Wellness
Emotional wellness is about healthily managing your emotions and developing positive coping skills. It includes healthily expressing your feelings, setting boundaries, and taking time for self-care. Maintaining our emotional wellness is vital, as we use our cognitive minds to steer our way through life.
Occupational Wellness
Occupational wellness is about finding work that you enjoy, and that is meaningful to you. Occupational wellness includes setting goals, networking, and taking steps to further your career. This aspect should also include finding a job that promotes work-life balance!
Environmental Wellness
Environmental wellness is about connecting with nature and your surroundings. It includes spending time outdoors, recycling, and reducing your carbon footprint. When we care for our surroundings and spend time outdoors, we feel a sense of accomplishment and as if we are doing our part to take care of our planet.
Financial Wellness
Financial wellness is about managing your finances in a way that is responsible and sustainable. Some things include planning for your future, creating a budget, contributing to a retirement account, and investing in yourself. Proper financial wellness can also set our futures up for success!
Spiritual Wellness
Being spiritually healthy means finding your purpose in life and connecting with something larger than yourself. It includes things like meditating, praying, and spending time in nature. To tap into your spiritual wellness, you can start processes that help you understand your beliefs, values, and ethics, which will help guide your life. Try attending a church service, meditating, or building awareness through journaling.
Physical Wellness
Taking care of your body and making healthy lifestyle choices are essential. Getting enough sleep, eating nutritious foods, and exercising regularly are part of this process. Another important aspect of physical wellness is ensuring you visit your doctor to prevent and maintain any health concerns while also knowing where to go in case of an emergency.
Social Wellness
Social wellness is about developing and maintaining healthy relationships. It includes things like communication, teamwork, and conflict resolution. To enhance your social health, try strengthening relationships within your social circle or attending activities or group classes to meet those with similar interests!
How Are Wellness Dimensions Connected?
As you can see, the eight dimensions of wellness are all interconnected. An imbalance in one area can negatively impact the other areas. For example, if you're not getting enough sleep, you may not have the energy to exercise or eat a healthy diet. Or, if you're feeling stressed at work, you may find it challenging to focus on your relationships or take care of your physical health.
Maintaining a balance in all areas of our lives is essential to being our best selves. When one area is lacking, we can take steps to improve it.
We encourage you to take time out of your day to focus on your wellness. Here are some tips:
- Schedule some "me time" into your day. This can be anything you like, from listening to a podcast to taking a yoga class.
- Make time for social activities, even if it's just coffee with a friend or attending a community event.
- Eat healthy meals and snacks, and drink plenty of water.
- Exercise regularly, even if it's just a brisk walk around the block.
- Ensure you get enough sleep! A typical adult needs 7-8 hours of sleep per night.
- Take some time to relax and de-stress. You can do this by taking a bath or listening to calming music.
No matter what area of your life you want to improve, taking small steps can help you make significant changes. And by focusing on all aspects of your wellness, you can create a well-rounded and holistic approach to your health and happiness.
